En 1984, Amstrad (Alan Michael Sugar TRADing, du nom de son fondateur) n'était encore qu'un fabricant de matériel HI-FI. Les voir fabriquer à leur tour un micro-ordinateur n'avait rien d'étonnant, et la méfiance était de rigueur. Pourtant, l'Amstrad CPC 464 a plus d'un tour dans son sac. Le CPC est commercialisé en juin 1984 en Angleterre et en octobre en France. C'est un raz-de-marée instantané, les magasins sont régulièrement en rupture de stock. Nous voici à l'apogée des micro-ordinateurs 8 bits. Certes, leur utilité familiale est toute relative ; comme l'a pertinemment remarqué (à sa manière) le magazine Hebdogiciel dans son tonitruant article « Désolé mais l'informatique, c'est de la merde », un micro-ordinateur domestique, c'est fait pour jouer et apprendre à programmer. Bien qu'elles servent souvent de prétexte pour acheter un micro, les applications éducatives et bureautiques sont encore assez pauvres.

CPCrulez[Content Management System] v8.732-desktop Page créée en 105 millisecondes et consultée 20409 fois L'Amstrad CPC est une machine 8 bits à base d'un Z80 à 4MHz. Le premier de la gamme fut le CPC 464 en 1984, équipé d'un lecteur de cassettes intégré il se plaçait en concurrent  du Commodore C64 beaucoup plus compliqué à utiliser et plus cher. Ce fut un réel succès et sorti cette même années le CPC 664 équipé d'un lecteur de disquettes trois pouces intégré. Sa vie fut de courte durée puisqu'en 1985 il fut remplacé par le CPC 6128 qui était plus compact, plus soigné et surtout qui avait 128Ko de RAM au lieu de 64Ko.
