Computing with the Amstrad | AMSTRAD SEMANAL |
Bet you'll lose your shirt in SURJIT RANDHAWA's PONTOON is a simulation of the well known card game, the object being to hold cards of a higher face count than the bank - in this case the computer. The computer deals both you and itself two cards. You can see your cards but one of the computer's cards remains concealed. After placing a bet on the opening strength of your hand, you can increase its total face value by "twisting" further cards until you think you have a total to beat the bank's. You must do this without exceeding a total of 21 or else you "bust" and lose. When adding up the cards values, 10s to king count 10, ace counts 1 or 11, and all other cards count their face value. The bank will continue to twist cards to you until you decide to "stick" - when you consider your count is high enough. Once you have chosen to stick the bank will take cards until it either beats your total or busts itself. You start the game with £10 and must bet a minimum of one pound each time you play a hand. A self-destruct option at the start of the game adds a little extra spice, because should you be brave enough to select it and run out of money not only have you lost your shirt, you've also lost your program and must load it again. |
