Being the intrepid explorer Roland you have entered a vast and mysterious tomb. You find yourself at the bottom of the maze and you must endeavour to climb to the top and find the way out. On your way up you encounter many hazards and monsters that try to make your life harder. Every time you touch one of these hazards your energy drains and if you are not careful you could die. To help you get out. you can jump over the energy-sapping rats and shoot at the ghosts the only drawback is that you have a limited amount of bullets in your gun and shooting the ghosts only frightens them. The only way of gaining more energy is by finding the magical vases full of the Elixir of Life. Roland on the Ropes is quite an old game now. First it was out for the Spectrum and called Fred, the Amstrad version soon followed but it was not a major improvement over the original. The graphics, while being quite acceptable, scroll jerkily and can be off putting. The game itself is quite fun to play at the outset but soon becomes tedious after a couple of tombs have been completed. Roland on the Ropes probably has a greater appeal for younger players but it's doubtful whether arcade addicts will enjoy it for long.
