An unofficial, rewritten version of the commercial game Oh Mummy , with many improved graphics and additional playing options.
Oh Mummy was the creation of John Line and Daren White, who would end up purchasing Gem Software themselves after the company hit financial difficulties. The initial version of the game was released for the ZX Spectrum in April 1984 with versions for other Z80-based machines following later that year. While many recognise the game as an Amidar clone Daren himself cites a different inspiration. "It was actually a derivative that we based Oh Mummy on, a game called Painter," he reveals. "There was also, a touch of Pac-manin there too!"
★ UPDATES:
2025-08-05:
Initial release
I say basic, it is a slightly "enhanced" version of the original game. The sprites are ASIC sprites, mummy movement timing is now controlled by a Z80 interrupt. Menu selection is much more responsive now as I separated the menu code from the mummy movement code. I'm not overly happy with the external corridors idea. The code for it is still in there, but wandering about the corridors seems to distract the player from the frantic focus of the original game?
2025-11-06:
Multiplayer version
Adding some effects to the player and mummies when they collide...
Some new images for the treasures, sarcophagus, key and scroll
The sweeper mummy can now sweep away your tracks, forcing the player to retrace them to reveal the treasure!
2025-11-15:
New torch "weapon" now working. When you get the torch, a flame will follow you around the tomb. If any mummies happen to come into contact with it, they will disintegrate, saving your life.
New artefact to uncover. The ankh will pause all mummy movements and render them harmless for a short period. It appears randomly in place of the torch, so to make the game a little more interesting.
2025-11-21:
New elixir artefact will give the player a burst of speed for a short time. This will appear randomly in place of the torch and ankh artefacts.
