Wait a moment while the computer shuffles and deals four hands. Then fix the contract by bidding according to the ACOL convention (details below). In the game itself you play south only as defender, or north and south if declarer, while the computer plays both east and west in either case. You will see the score displayed on-screen and at any time you may abandon a hand by chosing option 'E' Hands can be rebid and replayed with option 'R'. DETAILS OF THE BIDDING The computer recognises both STAYMAN and GERBER bidding conventions. It uses the ACOL system with a weak no trump, based on distribution and number of High Card Points (HCP's). These are allocated as follows: an Ace is 4HCP's, King = 3, Queen = 2, Jack - 1. A balanced hand contains no void suit, no singleton, and no suit longer than 4 cards. Computer Bids Opening suit bids require 12HCP's unless the opponents have bid (when 11 will suffice). Over a pre-emptive bid 16+ HCP's are required (see later). An opening No trump bid is made with 13-15 HCP's and a balanced hand. (An OVERCALL requires 16-19 points). A level 2 opening (like 2D) requires 20+ HCP's. A level 3 opening is pre-emptive and weak: 4-10 HCP's in a suit of 7 cards minimum. Replies (to a level one opening suit bid like 15): less than 6 HCP's no bid (spacebar) 6-10 HCP's: if your partner opened a major suit (Spades or Hearts and you have four-card support, then raise. Otherwise bid your best suit. 11 + HCP's: as above, except with an unnecessary raise of level. If the computer makes a jump bid it is indicated by the preface 'STOP'. Replies to level one No trump bid with a balanced hand and: less than 10 HCP's no bid; 11-12 bid 2NT; 13+ bid 3NT. With an unbalanced hand and no four card major bid your best suit otherwise make a club bid. This is the STAYMAN convention, and requires your partner to bid their better major if at least 4 cards are held, otherwise a Diamond denial. If there is intervention then No bid. Reply to a level 2 opening bid with 2NT if less than 5 HCP's - otherwise as for a single opening bid. Reply to a pre-emptive opening bid with No bid if you have less than 16 HCP's. A change of suit in reply is forcing for one round (partner must bid again). Gerber Slam Convention If the player bids 4C the prompt appears: Gerber Y/N. Select Y and the following bid by North will indicate the number of Aces held: 4D = 0 or 4 Aces 4H = 1 Ace 4S = 2 Aces 4NT = 3 Aces No part of this program or inlay card AMSTRAD BRIDGE PLAYER may be reproduced without prior permission in writing.
