ATOMIC FICTION
April, 1992. The energy crisis, of limited extent up to then, is now taking on gigantic proportions. According to the experts, things have come to the point where, if no drastic steps are taken within the next 48 hours, the computer centers controlling ICBMs will fail, causing accidental launching of the missiles and an ensuing nuclear catastrophy. However, all hope is nol lost. A solution exists; its name is Kyrium. This energy-packed ore has been known to exist for as much as five years, but no plans have been made for its exploitation, because of its high radioactivity which makes extraction by conventional means quite impossible. For this reason, scientists the world over have collaborated on the design and construction of a new machine : THE R.O.M. (Radioactive Ore Module). You have been chosen to pilot the R.O.M. However, this wil! be far from easy. GAME INSTRUCTIONS To recover Kyrium, the ore that is the last chance to avert the current energy crisis, world authorities have selected you as the first R.O.M. pilot, of which only three working prototypes have been built. This would be easy enough if the eighteen galleries which are to be your theatre of operations were not populated with radioactive monsters and heavy gold ingots. If they collide with the pipeline that connects you to the surface, you will lose the R.O.M. To avoid this, you'll have to use the winch to get the R.O.M. back to safety. On the other hand, you can absorb them, which will net you a substantial bonus. It is also possible to blast monsters and ingots to ashes by lashing out with an energy beam. You are given two of those at the beginning of the game, and will gel one at the end of each level. The game has 4 speeds of play and 4 difficulty settings, and the option of playing in invisible galleries. It is played with the joystick (in which case an 'Enhanced Joystick' option allows to have better control over diagonals for some joysticks), or with the keyboard : A, S, Space Bar : winch (the keys can be redefined) Z, ENTER : energy beam ESC : ends game Good Luck!
