Amstrad's £87m law suit (New Computer Express) |
Amstrad is flexing its corporate muscle in an attempt to win £87 million in a law suit. It is suing California-based drive makers, Seagate, for loss of reputation and, of course, money. The case relates to Seagate's ST277R hard disk drivers which were fitted to PC236s. Amstrad is alleging that these dodgy drivers forced it to recall 7,000 machines. Seagate is not lying down and roiling over however, it claims that the action is “without merif and that it will contest the suit, Amstrad badly needs to protect its reputation which has been under constant attack in the media, and more importantly, in the City of London, since the company began trading in the late 60s. With news that the company has had to write-off some £20 million of unsold stock, and is likely to announce halved profits of around the same figure next month, it needs all the help it can get!
