Amstrad acts over PC allegations (Popular Computing Weekly) |
AMSTRAD is currently considering legal action over suggestions that ICI would not purchase its PC in bulk because of doubts over its reliability. The company's share price fell from 128p to 116p after the Sunday Times quoted an ICI source as saying the machine could be prone to overheating. In the wake of the share price drop Amstrad hand-delivered a press statement categorically denying the allegations. and this seems to have stopped the slide. Speaking to Popular, the Amstrad chairman described the allegations as "a pack of lies" and said the matter was in the hands of the company's lawyers. He would not, however, comment on what action the company proposed to take. The statement itself refers to a "concerted dirty tricks campaign" designed to damage Amstrad. but although Sugar says he knows who is responsible he refuses to name names. Dealers in other machines are, however, taking the rumour up with gusto. He categorically denies the overheating allegation, claiming that Amstrad has tested a wide range of add-on cards in the machine, but says he Nor does he accept that the future of the PC rests on whether or not ICI decides to buy it.
