Transact is a book-keeping system for small business. It presupposes knowledge of Double Entry book-keeping, it does not set out to teach bookkeeping. However, if you are already running a business and wish to simplify your accounting procedure then this program may be of help. It sets out to speed up the process of recording and reporting a company's financial affairs in a manner consistent with normal accounting practice. The program is menu-driven, and comes complete with preset demonstration Accounts file. On running the program you are asked for a report date and then given the option of loading an existing file or creating a new one. There are 10 preset key accounts headings; and 90 account headings to be defined by the user. Once headings have been defined the menu offers the options of accounts file handler, process transactions, restart program, or end. Choice is by single keypress, extremely easy to use. Each option is menu-driven, with a clear screen layout. Pressing enter returns you to the main menu. Other options include automatic VAT calculation, end of period profit and loss update, summarise entries by total or item, and journal facility. Input of information is extremely simple, and the constant security reminders a nice touch. The manual claims the program to be protected against user error and in testing this seemed to be the case. The only true way to test a program like this is in everyday use. If you are looking for a simple to use, comprehensive book-keeping program then this may be what you are looking for. A.W. , HCW
