FLASH! Earth will soon be under attack from Ming. You must stop him. Seek help from Prince Barin. This is the game's opening message and you have only 24 hours in which to save the world. The only way is to go to Ming's home planet and destroy both him and his planet-killer missiles, so off you fly ... only to crash into the jungle. This is the inauspicious start to the first section of a three part game and each one must be completed before going on to the next. The object in part one - the jungle - is to find the cave where Prince Barin lives. This isn't easy when all you can see is a side-on view of your present location, much like a graphic adventure and it's advisable to make a map. As you progress you'll have to leap over ravines, tangle with big red spiders, ape-men, strange flying tortoises (well that's what they look like to me! and large birds. You have a gun so you can give as good as you get but your bullet supply is limited. Once you have found the cave you must wrestle with Prince Barin as he has the means to reach Ming but he doesn't want to give it to you. Tactics are needed here and you must learn the moves and try and confuse him. In time he'll tire thus giving you the chance to get the better of him. If you overpower Barin you'll find yourself with transport - a jetbike — and now you must track Ming himself using the onboard instruments. You will have to deal with a rearguard, minefields and power gates. If you manage to get close, you get your chance at Ming. Be warned, it isn't easy. As this is a multi-load game it's annoying to find there is no password system and if you die in part two, you have to go back to part one with the reloading that entails. Despite this, the price of only £1.99 makes Flash Gordon very good value for money, and one that I can recommend. Paul Sherreard , CWTA |
