Open the Doors of Doom and Destiny

Call it fate, call it destiny, call it doom - as soon as I loaded Doors of Doom (Plus). I knew exactly what to expect. A zany, whacky arcade adventure with three difficulty levels, featuring a hapless hero armed only with a laser gun, who has to defeat legions of rogue robots in order to find the missing sections of a weapons system which will allow him to assemble the three Doors, in order to pass the test which will allow humanity to become part of the galactic federation ... you get the idea?

Doors of Doom (Plus) is very colourful, accompanied by reasonable music, and has a fair degree of strategy and zapalogy involved. Each time you find a piece of the weapon system, you must find out how to use it, then face losing it when you teleport to the next level. Your task is to eliminate all the robots, keeping an eye on your energy level and picking up cups of tea to revive you.
All this would be perfectly hoopy, but the scrolling is well jerky (as they say), and your little character seems quite happy to walk through the air in places, as well as on the various bridges, monoliths and girders of the background.

The game's main saving grace is the scenery designer, which allows you to edit the background to your own taste. In fact, the instructions spend more time explaining this option than dealing with the game itself, giving some indication of how exciting the whole business is. Doors of Doom (Plus) - ? I'd hate to see Doors of Doom (Minus).

DOORS OF DOOM+ [Les Portes du Destin+]
(c) AMSOFT

Developer: GEM Software
Author: John LINE

★ INFOS:

  • The enhanced version of Doors of Doom has four levels instead of the one on the tape version, making a much larger and even more impressive game.
  • Doors of Doom+ has arrived and has three delightful scenery backgrounds, including the one from the cassette. One of the three is picked randomly when you start each new game, so you'll quickly get to know them all. The excellent screen-design facility is there also. Although the gameplay is uncomplicated the superb graphics and compulsiveness make this a worthy addition to disk software.
