THE Dervish way of life is heavily based on magic, and, as one of the wizards of the community, you must travel through the eight levels of awareness in order to reach the upward path.

You are going to need all your skills and mystic powers to succeed - as well as the patience to master the controls.

When first loaded Dervish gave that déjà vu feeling. Its so much like Druid that its quite unnerving. You even have a totally useless chap following you constanly hindering your progress.

As you explore the bland landscape you have many different weapons and spells at your disposal to help prevent evil demons attacking you. These spells include bolts of light and water, Chi, and Fugue, the effects of which can only be discovered by casting them. There are also many objects to be found which are essential to completing your quest.

Various diamond-shaped houses will help you replenish your limited spells. A counter moves randomly below your weapons, and you have to select your chosen supply before time runs out.

The graphics are pretty awful - the scrolling is flickery, and on numerous occasions part of the screen moves seconds after another.

Bland colouring only results in a bad headache and spots before the eyes, and the maps are a joke, although I didn't laugh.

The only half-deccent pictures are the icons, but even they aren't thatt much better.

The music on the title screen is prehistoric and the in-game sound effects wouldn't be missed. The worst part of Dervish, though. is its playability. No game should be easy, but this one takes the idea a little too far and frustration soon sets in.

The instructions don't help at all. and they don't even explain the role of the chap who is following you around like a lost sheep.

However, more instructions would not have helped much, as this Power House game has about as much power as a deflated balloon.
