MULTIMIXX 1

Codemasters started it all, turning out four-game budget-priced compilation? under the Quattro banner, and now Kixx, US Gold's budget label, is getting in on the act with the Multimixx series.

With the Multimixx compilations, though, you don't get four games - you only get three. Still, with each Multimixx costing £4.99, that's still a mere £1.66 per game.

Multimixx 1 is a collection of classic golfing games, all from the US Gold stable. These are Leaderboard. Tournament Leaderboard and World Class Leaderboard.

Leaderboard is the game that started it all. Looking at it now, you'd wonder that it started anything. The graphics are positively prehistoric, with landscapes composed of blocks the size of entire counties. However, it does still play extremely well.

Tournament Leaderboard is more of th9 same. Another four courses, to be exact. The graphics are still entirely uninspiring, but if you don't mind that, there's some serious one and two-player fun to be had.

World Class Leaderboard is another kettle of fish entirely. The graphics are completely new, and feature recognisable scenic details like trees, and water, and bunkers. The price you pay for all this graphic splendour is the need to load each hold in separately. But it really doesn't take more than a moment, so the hassle factor is practically zero.

All three games share the now-standard computer golf control method of (a) selecting your club, (b) aiming and (c) judging when to let go of the Fire button while watching the on-screen Power/Snap meter. It's easy to grasp, but not always easy to do, especially since getting the Snap wrong sends your ball slicing off course.

Multimixx 1 is a real golfing feast. You get loads of courses for your money, so the only thing to worry about is whether you've got the energy to complete them all. If you've already got one of these games, then don't bother. If you haven't, you can't really go wrong.
