Home computers have now become an everyday part of life for a great many people, and although they are not yet as commonplace as television sets and radios, the gap is closing. Probably the vast majority of home computers are underutilized, being used only for playing games in most cases. However, there seems to be a steady trend towards using home computers in a greater variety of applications, and communications seem to be the major growth area. For most users this means connecting the computer to the telephone system via a modem, and this opens up the possibility of computer communications between fellow enthusiasts, or the alternative chosen by most people, which is to access databases and similar systems. There are literally hundreds of thousands of pages of information available on a vast range of subjects, and other services such as ordering by computer are also available. Although this is the most relevant form of computer communications for most users, there are other types, such as local networking, or for the more adventurous, computer communications via radio. For the newcomer to this aspect of computing there is a lot of technical jargon to overcome. The purpose of this book is to explain the basic principles and the practicalities of computer communications, assuming no prior knowledge other than that the reader has had a certain amount of practical experience with home computers, and is familiar with the main terminology. Le premier de la gamme fut le CPC 464 en 1984, équipé d'un lecteur de cassettes intégré il se plaçait en concurrent du Commodore C64 beaucoup plus compliqué à utiliser et plus cher. Ce fut un réel succès et sorti cette même années le CPC 664 équipé d'un lecteur de disquettes trois pouces intégré. Sa vie fut de courte durée puisqu'en 1985 il fut remplacé par le CPC 6128 qui était plus compact, plus soigné et surtout qui avait 128Ko de RAM au lieu de 64Ko. |
