IN Fishing you have just entered the United Kingdom Fishing Contest and will be competing against six top anglers.

First enter your name then the details of the tackle and bait you wish to use, taking weather conditions and the depth and speed of flow of the water into account.

Then it's off to the riverside for the all-in - that's the start of the match for the non-anglers among you.

You cast in your line with the A and Z keys then all you can do is what all anglers do while waiting for a bite - sit back, be patient, have a sandwich, drink your coffee, smoke a fag - but whatever you do, don't take your eyes off that float.

It will bob up and down occasionally with the current - but keep your finger ready on the spacebar or joystick fire button, ready to strike when the float disappears under the water
completely. If you're quick enough you should hook the fish and all you have to do then is land it.

As most anglers will tell you, this is where your troubles start. To reel the fish in you'll have to work quite hard tapping either of the two Shift keys (yes we cater for left-handed fishermen), or waggling the joystick.

Of course tiddlers should pose you no "reel" problems - it's the larger fish that will need that extra effort. If one manages to take you outside the screen boundary that's the proverbial one that got away I'm afraid -smashed as anglers say.

The big 'uns lie further out in the middle of the river so its worth trying there occasionally. But beware, although they will bump up your overall weight they are much more difficult to catch.

And even when you've hooked one you'll have your work cut out to land it, your success rate depending on the correct choice of tackle.

The match lasts for five minutes and in that time you must try to catch as much as possible. When time is up -at the all out - the fish caught by each competitor are weighed and a table is displayed showing the order in which the anglers finished, along with their total weights.

There is one thing that should add some excitement to the proceedings. The day before the match was due to start, the organisers put about 6001b of fish into the river. But an hour later they received an anonymous phone call to say that the Organisation Against Cruelty to Fish had introduced several large pike some weighing as much as 40lb.

You'll be warned when you've hooked one of these monsters, but you'll have to work hard to land it.

Good luck and tight lines!
