Newstar Software Mailing List | Applications Bureautique |
Mail List is a small but powerful program designed for those who wish to use mail merge facilities on their word processor (sit down everyone with Locoscript) but who don't want to invest the money and time it would take to buy and learn a fully fledged database. The presentation of the program is superb; small virtuoso touches used in the screen display put more expensive programs to shame. Each record can have up to 18 lines or fields and most of these come supplied with already suggested definitions. Maximum use is made of default values and all you have to do is overtype the things you want to change. Once defined, the records can be sorted by a specified field and a subset can be saved in a new file depending on whether another specified field includes or excludes a given string, eg, If the town field = LONDON Unfortunately, it seems impossible to specify more complex criteria for sorting and searching, eg, "town = LONDON, or town 'BIRMINGHAM'" would have been nice. Demo files are also given to show how you can use your list with wordprocessors such as Newword to not only control the letter's name and address but also which paragraphs are included in it and in fact the mailmerge options offered by the word processor mean that a sophisticated database is possibly irrelevant anyway. Mail List also includes its own label printing option which is easily the simplest system I have ever used. A selection of common label sizes are displayed on screen together with an indication of how your data would look on them You can position the printing and change the printer pitch size on the display to decide exactly how you would like it to look and it prints out correctly Only single width labels are supported Tony Kendle , PopularComputingWeekly
